Our Team
G & T Connect Directors, Gemma Greenshields and Tara King, each bring over 17 years of experience in communicating and engaging with communities for local government and government agencies. We take a down-to-earth, positive approach and work collaboratively with our clients to achieve successful outcomes that meet their budgets.
Gemma and Tara both hold an International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) Advanced Certificate in Engagement, provide the networks, community engagement strategies, and stakeholder relationship management expertise to foster and maintain these relationships. G & T Connect Ltd is also proud to hold IAP2 membership, reflecting our commitment to best practices in engagement.

Gemma is an award-winning engagement specialist who is passionate about enabling people to get involved in shaping their place through inclusive engagement. Gemma holds an IAP2 Advanced Certificate in Engagement and a Bachelor of Environmental Management (majoring in policy and planning), which provide her with a holistic approach to engagement and project outcomes. After 17 years with WSP and Opus, Gemma co-founded G & T Connect with Tara – a long time colleague and friend.
Gemma thrives on a challenge and enjoys difficult conversations that create connection and results. Her work in adaptation planning has demonstrated this in award-winning work on the St Clair to St Kilda Coastal Plan, through WSP and Dunedin City Council. This plan won the NZPI Nancy Northcroft Supreme award, the NZPI Best Practice Consultation and Public Participation processes, and IAP2 (International Association of Public Participation) Australasian Core Value Awards Project of the Year and Planning Category.
Gemma has worked on a number of large scale multi-agency projects in complex urban environments. She is passionate about our changing futures and has demonstrated that with her work on coastal adaptation and climate change with the St Clair to St Kilda Coastal Plan. She has a passion for creating robust engagement strategies and strongly believes better project outcomes are achieved by working together.
Gemma enjoys public speaking and has presented at a number of conferences including the NZ Coastal Society keynote address, presentations at Āpōpō, NZ Planning Institute and the IAP2 Symposiums. She is also the MC for the 2025 IAP2 New Zealand symposium in Auckland.
Gemma is excited about what G & T Connect will bring to clients and communities of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Tara King

Tara holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Canterbury University and an IAP2 Advanced Certificate in Community Engagement. With 17 years of experience in community engagement, her career journey began in the UK, working in customer call centres and a leading advertising agency in London. On her return to New Zealand she dedicated 16 years to the Christchurch City Council, primarily focusing on community engagement. While at the Council, she was seconded as a Communications Manager to lead a team of communications staff as part of the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Team for almost four years following the Canterbury earthquakes. After spending four years as an engagement specialist at an international engineering consultancy, Tara co-founded G&T Connect with Gemma.
Tara is deeply passionate about fostering meaningful community engagement. She believes that true engagement is built on trust, respect, and genuine two-way communication, ensuring all voices are heard and valued. Her commitment to good community engagement means creating strategies that connect people, solve problems, and achieve shared goals. This dedication has led her to present alongside clients at notable conferences, including the IAP2 Symposium 2024 and Recreation NZ Green Pavlova 2024 on the Bays Skate and Scooter project, as well as facilitating a panel discussion for Gemma’s presentation at the IAP2 Symposium 2023 (St Clair to St Kilda Coastal Plan in Dunedin).
